Lakewood
Shores Resort has a long and historic past. In the early 1900's the
land it sits upon was known as Serradella Farms, owned by Carl E
Schmidt. An experimental farmer, Schmidt was known for his
inventiveness and forward thinking, plowing his fields using a pulley
system rather than a plow and ox. He was also involved in the cross
breeding of cattle and bison in an attempt to develop heartier breeds.
In the late
1960's developers purchased the land and developed it into a golf
community known as Lakewood Shores, featuring homesites, a private golf
course and many amenities. Lakewood struggled during the early years
as all the development in northern Michigan was concentrated on the west
side of the state.
In 1986,
entrepreneur Stan Aldridge, owner of Indianwood C.C. located in Lake
Orion, MI, purchased the golf course and all adjoining land. Steps
to develop Lakewood Shores into a golf resort began in 1990 with the
opening of its first on-site lodging. With the goal in mind of
offering great golf at a great dollar value, thoughts turned to adding a
second course. With this idea in mind, Stan's son Kevin Aldridge
designed and built The Gailes. Patterned after the famed seaside
courses of Scotland, this course offers a totally unique style of golf not
found anywhere else in Michigan or the Midwest. The Gailes received
national acclaim from Golf Digest, which ranked it the "#1 Best
New Resort Course in the United States for 1993". This set
the tone for future development and expansion of Lakewood Shores Resort.
Additional
lodging soon followed, along with The Wee Links, an 18 hole pitch and putt
course ideal for kids, families and groups looking for late afternoon
fun. As the resort business grew, thoughts of a third course soon
came to mind and in 2001 Lakewood Shores Resort opened its newest course,
Blackshire.
Golf Digest rated
The
Gailes, 'The Best New Resort Course in the United States' in 1993,
and in 1996 rated it 'The Number One Public and Resort Course in the
State of Michigan'. Designed to recreate the actual look of the
famed seaside courses of Scotland, you'll encounter large double
greens, meandering burns and long fescue grasses. So if you have
never had the opportunity to play golf in Scotland, but have always
dreamed of doing so, you need only to head to Lakewood Shores
Resort.
Blackshire, the
newest course at Lakewood Shores was designed to
recreate the look and feel of the famous Pine Valley Country Club.
Although not a replica, it offers a similar rugged feel with hardwoods,
large sand waste areas, and undulating greens.
The
Serradella offers the perfect resort course to complement the other
championship designs. A classic parkland design with minimal
hazards, wide fairways and large greens. Numerous floral
gardens planted on this course will take your breath away.
Parents and kids alike
love the Wee Links, our 18 hole pitch & putt course designed
specifically with families in mind. Featuring holes ranging from
30 to 100 yards, The Wee Links gives kids an opportunity to
enjoy some real success at golf!
Value,
variety and attentive friendly service is what you will experience at
Lakewood Shores Resort. Whether you are young or old, an occasional or
avid golfer, (or somewhere in between), get ready to relax, unwind and
avoid the hustle and bustle.
The resort
also offers a full array of family activities including a private beach on
Cedar Lake perfect for swimming, jet skiing, canoeing and
fishing. Just minutes away are beautiful beaches of Lake Huron
as well as horseback riding and other area attractions.
